Padfone FAQ

Our Padfone FAQ is a work in progress. The ASUS Padfone was announced officially at World Mobile Congress 2012. More recently, Asus has set the date of October 16th for the unveiling of the Padfone 2. The specifications of Padfone 2 are not yet known. Until the Padfone 2 hits pre order status, I wouldn’t take details as being 100% final. With that said, here is our always updating Padfone FAQ.

What exactly is the ASUS Padfone?

Instead of us trying to tell you what it is, why not provide you the official Padfone press release? We think that will be the best summary and vision that is the ASUS Padfone.

From the official ASUS Padfone Press Release:

The ASUS PadFone is an incredible 4.3” smartphone featuring a Super AMOLED qHD display, the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor and an ultra-sharp 8-megapixel digital camera with Fuji image processor all wrapped in an exquisite design that is optimized for Google’s Android 4.0 operating system. When placed inside the optional PadFone Station, it transforms into a 10.1” tablet with 5 times the battery capacity. The PadFone offers unmatched versatility via ASUS’ proprietary Dynamic Display technology which allows seamless transition between the PadFone and PadFone Station display screens. In addition, the PadFone Station offers an optional keyboard dock that essentially turns the PadFone into an ultraportable computing device. The PadFone also comes with the option of a PadFone Stylus Headset which is a Bluetooth stylus pen that transforms into a headset for picking up calls easily.

When is the Padfone release date?

The ASUS Padfone release date is predicted to be Q4 2011 April 2012.

What countries will the Padfone be available to buy?

This is still unknown as of February 27, 2012. More details should be coming in the following weeks. Follow us on Twitter because we will post details as they break. But if I was to guess, I would suggest an Asia and Europe release initially. I base this on previous 3G enabled Asus tablets which were released in a few countries such as Germany, Italy and France, but the 3G models never came to North America.

What is going to be the Padfone price?

No official Padfone price has been released yet. The Padfone price will be likely as the pre order stage nears in March 2012. Digitimes, which often gets accurate ASUS information, predicts that the Padfone price will be US$799-1,000. Note that this pricing was estimated in late 2011.

Does the tablet part of the Padfone function without the smartphone docked?

No. The tablet is essentially brainless. The smartphone is the brain of the Padfone and is required to make the tablet operational.

What is the size of the Padfone tablet?

10.1 Inches

What is the size of the Padfone smartphone?

4.3 Inches

  5. Arne Magnus Tranum says:

This is probably a stupid question, but bear with me…

Can I hook up my Padfone to a TV-set via HDMI and watch videos on the TV?
I have to ask, because I read someplace that it’s not possible, and it seemed odd to me…

  6. Patrick says:

Will the phone work in speakerphone mode when docked inside the tablet? I.e. if working in “netbook” mode with the phone docked in the tablet and the tablet docked in the keyboard, can I make phone calls without any headset (wired or wireless) where audio output plays through the tablet speakers and input is taken from the tablet microphone?

Can I send SMS text messages similarly, when in “netbook” mode?

  7. Sven Michel says:

Hi, In addition to Arne’s question, and while you are testing this: Is there a possibility to connect other devices to the microHDMI-Port of the Padfonestation? So one could use it as a portable monitor?

Thanks for this Site (and for answering),

    Sven

  8. padfone user says:

Yes you can make and receive calls while the phone is docked in the tablet., but it might look a bit stupid to hold it as if it was a phone. You can use headphones (good ones are included) or the stylus, or just undock it.

Can’t answer your question sven, but I wouldn’t count on it.

  9. Joao says:

    Some questions:
    1. Will Padfone 2 be launched really on october 16th?
    2. Do you know if it will be available in Portugal?
3.What is the price you’re expecting for this new equipment?
4.What was the inicial price of the first one?
    5. In the bottom part of tablet there are some connections to the dock station… Is one of them a vga? In other words can I connect it to a TV or something?
    6. When you have to answer a call, you can do it in the tablet? (with the earphones provided in the padfone’s box)

    Hope you answer it :)

  10. Ignacio says:

    Hi, some more questions:
    1. Do you think they are going to sell the phone alone, for example, in case you loose or s.o. stoles you the phone (–> the tablet would be unusefull without it, isn’t it? )
    2. Does it have a USB connection? Or do you have to buy the querty typer to have it?

    Thank you for answering!

  11. pct says:

Typing this on the padfone2, but still not able to figure out,how to make the padstation work standalone, without inserting the phone in the slot.

Right now,it seems just an extension of the phone… without the phone, the tab wont work… ¦(
